Post-graduation work permit (PGWP). If you graduate from an eligible program, you can receive a Post-Graduation Work Permit of up to three years, depending on the length of your program. Note that as of 2026 PGWP eligibility has been tightened: field-of-study rules apply to college and diploma programs. So confirm your program still leads to a PGWP before you enrol.

Universite vs. Kolej
Universiteler: Lisans, yuksek lisans ve doktora dereceleri verir; arastirma agirliklidir.

PAL / TAL (Eyalet Onay Mektubu)

Higher education in Canada is built around two main institution types, and any school you enrol in must be a "Designated Learning Institution" (DLI). An offer from a non-DLI school is not valid for a study permit application.
University vs. College
Universities: Award bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees, with a research focus.

PAL / TAL (Provincial Attestation Letter)
Most college and undergraduate applications must include a Provincial/Territorial Attestation Letter (PAL/TAL) with the study permit. As of January 1, 2026, master's and doctoral students at a public DLI are exempt from this letter. A 2026 PAL is valid until December 31, 2026 and cannot be carried over from an earlier year.

The core numbers of a study permit application are clear: the application fee is CAD 150 and biometrics are CAD 85 (if you have not given them before) — CAD 235 in total. The decisive factor is your proof of funds.
Proof of Funds
As of September 1, 2025, the living-cost proof for a single applicant outside Quebec is CAD 22,895 per year — and this amount is separate from, and in addition to, tuition and travel costs. It rises for each accompanying family member.
Acceptable proof includes the last four months of bank statements, a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), scholarship letters, or a sponsor's affidavit.
The Quebec difference
If you will study in Quebec, you must obtain a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) before applying to IRCC for a study permit. Outside Quebec, you apply directly to IRCC.
